Teaching children about strangers

The dangers of strangers! This is what a parent often worries about, the possibilities that their child will be abducted or murdered by a stranger. Although this is a rare occurrence compared to a traffic accident, it is also sensible to teach your child about the following:

• Never go with anyone (even someone they know well) without telling the grown-up who is looking after them.

• If somebody they don’t know tries to take them away, it is ok to scream and kick.

• Tell your children always to tell you, if they have been approached by someone they don’t know.

• Make sure your child knows what to do if she or he got lost.

• In a crowded place, it’s safest to stand still and wait to be found.

Otherwise:

• Tell a police officer

• Go to a shop and tell someone behind the counter

• Tell someone who has children with them.

Also, teach your child his or her home address and phone number or the phone numbers of some other responsible person.

Stunning Holiday Villas and Apartments in Majorca

If you are looking for a holiday accommodation in Majorca, then try this website called owners direct.com. I have been browsing around for a self-catering accommodation and landed on this website which I think is very interesting. The website offers a wide range selection of villas and apartments to let in Majorca, the place where I intend to visit in February.

Now, what I like about this website is that you will be dealing directly with the owner of the property and probably the most detailed property letting or property rental website I have ever seen. They have loads of accommodations to let, even in the most popular holiday destinations such as Puerto Pollensa, Alcudia, and Cala San Vincente. Villas in Puerto Pollensa are absolutely stunning! Most of them got a private swimming pool, beautiful garden and a terrace where you can relax and enjoy the sun.

I would say these are luxury type villas and the prices would differ based on amenities, facilities and size of the property, same as the Villas in Alcudia and Villas in Cala San Vicente. Well, there are loads of rental properties listed there, so if you look around the lists, you will surely find what you are looking for.

Bow-legged children

Like most young children, my little girl also used to appear as bow-legged when she started walking. Now, you will know when a child has bow legs when there is a small gap between the knees and the ankles when the child is standing up. This is said to be a very minor problem as my little girl's doctor said that when children first start walking, it is normal to walk with their feet apart and to waddle and this problem in children would eventually correct themselves. Being bow-legged is only one of the common foot problems found in children and there are other several minor problems you will also notice in children's feet like knock knees, in-toeing, out-toeing, flat feet and tiptoe walking. Now these common problems are usually seen until the child is 2 years old, so if the gap is pronounced or does not correct itself, this is the time that you should check with a doctor, as I was once told that this could be a sign of rickets or a bone deformity.

60 Days Home Workout

Working out in your home is an ideal way to start the day, which is why more and more people are now into home workout program where they can choose their own time, like just before going to work or before leaving on a day out for fun with the family. Aside from that, there are actually loads of benefits in working out from home, this involves getting rid of the all the hassle form renewing your gym membership and its fee and avoid the hassle of going into the gym and the traffic along the way. For most people I know, they choose to workout at home so they could get the privacy they want as well as enjoying it with music of their choice and not to worry about the attire they would wear when having a workout.

All the reasons above were very practical and very economical that is why I have decided to have it a go. I have been researching by asking a couple of friends who have done it and reading online forums of which home workout really works the best! Now the thing is, I hate heavy lifting and using equipment’s that requires excessive strength, not to mention the cost of buying those physical exercise machines. Anyway, a friend suggested this Insanity Workout which she has been using for a couple of months and I think this is just the thing I am looking for! It is a 60 days workout that features cardio to increase endurance and burns calories, which make you, lose weight and the best thing about this is that it can all be done at home.

Most of the methods use in this Insanity workout is widely used by athletes which are plyometric exercises, calisthenics, cardio and some sports drill which could burn up to 1000 calories if done right. Well, no wonder why athletic people are in very good shape! By the way, my friend is not an athlete but she definitely has an athletic body to be proud of.

Anyway, if you require more information about this home workout or you want to give it a go, you can visit the website and read on their free Insanity Workout Review. On it, you will see some written exercise guides and a video you can follow and try for free.

To make bedtime easier for toddlers

Sleep problems may be avoided if you can establish a simple and soothing bedtime routine early. This can include bath, changing into night clothes, feeding, cuddling, and then putting to bed.

The best thing to do is try to put your baby down awake rather than getting him or her to sleep by rocking or cuddling him or her in your arms, otherwise your baby may not learn to fall asleep in the cot and may need nursing back to sleep if he or she wakes up again.

As your child gets older, keeping to a similar bedtime routine is also important. This should include a winding down period and the avoidance of excitement and over stimulation before bedtime.

I have here an example of routine that you may try to do for your child:

• Bath time and put in night clothes.
• A milky drink or supper.
• Brushing of teeth.
• A bedtime story.
• Making sure your child’s comforter, such as a dummy, cuddly toy, or security blanket is nearby.
• A good night kiss and a cuddle.
• Leaving dim lights on if necessary.

Halloween Ideas

It is now about 3 weeks to Halloween, and I think now it is the perfect time to start thinking about Halloween costumes and tricks or treats for kids. Like most parents, I also encourage my little one to have all the fun during Halloweens, got her a good witch costume last year and the year before that a pumpkin costume. Just a moment ago, I was looking online for a Halloween costume and ended reading on a very good article about Halloween costume ideas made simple written by Mark J Walters and I really like the article as there are some things he has written it, that I think everyone should think and consider in getting their Awesome Halloween Costumes. Anyway, I just think that the article would help a lot if you are sort of looking for an idea for this coming Halloween. Like knowing what is the appropriate thing to wear, especially when you are with the company of your child or children. Simple ideas that would make you stand out in a Halloween party, and making use of your old accessories. Well, Halloween only comes once in a year, so make the most of it by having fun with you and your child's costume, make up’s and accessories. And best of all, take some good photos that will brings back good memories.

Help your baby or child learn to talk

Here are some very simple yet very effective ways of helping your child/baby learns to talk. These have been around for many years and you might have already heard most of it from your parents as an advice on how to help your baby or child’s speech development. But anyway, here are those tips:

• Start talking to your child right from birth – Say what you are doing about the house, e.g., when unpacking your shopping.

• Start looking at books with your baby from an early age.

• Point things when going for a walk, e.g., There is a bus, the bus is red.

• Have fun singing nursery rhymes and song. Especially those with actions.

• Encourage your child to listen to different sounds.

• Gain your child’s attention when you want to talk together.

• Increase vocabulary by giving choices, e.g., Do you want an apple or banana?

• Give your child opportunities to talk.

• Don’t have the television on as a background noise.

• If your child says something incorrectly, say it back the right way. Do not make your child repeat it.

Cheap Designer Scrub Uniform

I have always thought that nurses scrub uniforms are a bit boring as they usually comes in dull blue or white color with no style or whatsoever. My husband is actually a nurse and he hates wearing his scrub uniform, probably the same as most of the nurses all over the world. Well today, good news to all nurses who are looking to buy cheap scrubs with that designer look! I happen to came across this website that sell designer scrub nurse uniforms for a very reasonable price.

What I like about their scrub is that they got more variety when it comes to color and there is a signature tag on the pocket which makes it more attractive. I also love the double stitching details on the pocket of the scrub tops and same as the pocket on the pants. It is very elegant! Well, my nurse husband agreed that this scrub looks really good for a very reasonable price, so his thinking of getting one for himself.

If interested, and you want to have a glance on their wide range of scrubs, please feel free to visit the website of the designer scrub clothing and see for yourself what you should have been wearing years ago.

How to brush a baby's or child’s teeth

I have done this with my little one and the best way to brush a baby's teeth- is to sit him or her on your knee with the head resting against your chest. Put a small pea size tooth paste on your baby’s toothbrush and start to brush her or his teeth in a circular motion very gently. He or she might not like it, and you do not have to worry if you have not brush it properly as the idea is just to get your baby use of brushing and to make it a part of her or his daily routine. You can also clean your baby’s teeth by wrapping a piece of damp gauze with a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste on it over your finger, this is ideal if your baby has not got any teeth or if the teeth are just starting to come out.

For an older child- stand behind and tilt his or her head upwards. Brush the teeth gently in a circular motion covering all the surfaces and let your child spit tooth paste out afterwards. It is important to rinse with water after brushing as it would reduce the benefit of fluoride.

Toddlers drawing on walls

From the age of 18 months you might notice that your child is starting to have an interest in drawing and would sometimes pick up a pen or pencil and write anything on a piece of paper, wall, floors, furniture’s, and even on curtains. Well, drawing is normal for toddlers as this is part of their brain and muscle development. However it is not good to just let your child write or draw everywhere, so here are some things you can do in order to prevent your child from drawing on walls, floors furniture’s, and curtains.

• Get involve with your child’s activity, you can use old envelopes slit open and the inside of cereal packets for paper and show your child that he or she can use this for drawing.

• Make drawing a bit fun by using crayons, felt tips, or powder paint. Add a washing up liquid and water to the powder paint for a thicker paint.

• Always explain to your little one that it is not good to write on walls, furniture’s, floors, and curtains and that he or she is always welcome to ask for a piece of paper to draw onto.

• You can buy a cheap drawing pad with a nice cover picture but as much as possible, try to recycle by using old cardboards, notebooks, and even junk mails with an empty back page.

• Lastly draw with your little one and make it a sort of learning as well as playing.

Pictures here were drawn by Chloe at the age of 2 years and 6 months.

All around stainless steel cleaner

This is probably what every household should have and as a full time mum and homemaker who do all the cleaning, I would recommend this product because cleaning has never been easier for me. I hate grease on my kitchen appliance as it would take time to take it off with just a damp cloth and a smear of dish washing liquid. However this product does it in seconds and leaves a dry and polished look in an instant. I would say it is brilliant for restoring a dry and dull kitchen steel appliances like ovens, oven hoods, refrigerators, dishwashers and stainless steel cookware. I also use this in cleaning the bathroom stainless steels, like the shower, bath and sink tops. So basically you can use this in cleaning most of the household stainless steel, that is why I would say this is an all around stainless steel cleaner .

Why breastfeeding is best for babies

As a mum, I am proud to have breast feed my baby, so I would also like to share these important reasons why every mother should breast feed their little one. These were actually explained to me by my baby’s health visitor during her first visit in our house. So here are those few good reasons:

• Breast milk is the only food that is naturally designed for your baby, so it contains all the nutrients your baby needs in the right amount and in the forms that are very easily absorbed and its composition changes as your baby grows.

• It contains growth factors and hormones to assist your baby’s development.

• Since your baby’s immune system is not fully developed at birth, you can help protect your baby from infection because your antibodies will be passed to your baby through your milk.

• As your baby continue to receive antibodies, he or she is much likely to get infections such as coughs, colds, and chest infections. Also your baby is likely to get allergies like eczema, for example.

• Breast feed babies are likely to get tummy upsets or to be constipated.

• It could lower the risk of juvenile diabetes, better dental health, and you baby is likely to become obese in later childhood.

NMEDA help makes life easier

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of NMEDA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Comfort and safety are probably the first thing every person thinks about when it comes to equipments, especially when it involves roads. This is where NMEDA comes to place in choosing the right equipment for persons who got disability to help them gain back the confidence they have lost and make travel easier for them. NMEDA does not sell anything but they got members which they call NMEDA dealers who are trained professionals that would help you get the right equipment specifically designed for the person with disability.

NMEDA actually has Dealers AND Quality Assurance Program (QAP) dealers, so to avoid confusion I would like to help explain the differences among the two members.
NMEDA members- they are required to adhere to the safety standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and to follow the NMEDA Guidelines. So, every time the NMEDA members update the Guidelines, a living document providing detailed recommended practices on equipment installation and modifications will be provided yearly.

The Quality Assurance Program- is the only nationally recognized accreditation program for the Adaptive Mobility Equipment Industry. Why Breast feeding is good for mums

I have here some good reasons why mothers should breastfeed their babies. These few good reasons are usually given to every mums all over the world by health professionals before and after child birt, as a way of promoting good health towards mother and baby.

• Breastfeeding reduces the risk of pre-menopausal cancer.

• It is much easier and more practical in the middle of the night.
• There is no need to prepare feeds, wash and sterilise bottle.
• Your baby isn’t kept waiting.
• You can save money from buying formula milks.

It’s A Book for all ages

Photobucket

I have just seen the trailer of the book “It’s A Book” by Lane Smith and I think it is absolutely fantastic! I actually do like the fact that story is so funny and yet so real and as an adult viewer I have enjoyed watching it to the point that I want to get my child one of this book. I think this would make any parent think twice before buying off their children with gadgets.

I do love books and the timeless classic feeling of reading one on my hand and I do not find that same feeling on reading on an electronic gadget, so I think we parent should encourage our children in reading a book too. Anyway, I have attached here the trailer of the book, so you can see and decide if this is appropriate enough for your child. Just another brilliant book from the trusted Macmillan kids publishing industry.

Brushing a baby or child’s teeth

New parent's guide in brushing a baby or child's teeth:

When can you start? Start early as soon as your baby’s teeth start to come through.

Buy a baby or milk teeth toothbrush and use it with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste. Now if you are worried about using fluoride, you can always ask your dentist whether the baby toothpaste is safe to use or has enough fluoride for your baby’s needs.

When brushing your baby or child’s teeth, do not worry if you don’t manage to brush much at first because the important thing at the start is to get teeth brushing accepted as part of everyday routine. Remember that your baby’s gum is still very sensitive, so try to brush as gently as you can.

The right room temperature for a baby

This is often a new parent’s question, what is the right temperature for a baby? Well, small babies are not very good in controlling their temperature and I was told by my health visitor that it is important to prevent little the little ones from getting too hot as it is from getting too cold. So here is what you should do:

• Check if the room temperature is warm enough for you to be comfortable wearing light clothing (16-20c), then it is the right temperature for your baby.
• Give your baby one light layer of clothing more than what you are wearing, but if the room is too hot for you keep your babies clothes light.
• If your baby sleeps with you on your bed, always check your baby as he or she may get too hot on your duvet.
• Always keep your baby’s head uncovered indoors, unless if it’s very cold, as my health visitor said a baby needs to lose heath from his or her head and face.
• Never use a hot water bottle or an electric blanket, as babies delicate skin could burn up easily or scald.
• An ill or feverish baby doesn’t need any extra bedding. In fact they usually need less, as per advice by health professionals.
• And always remove hats and extra clothing as soon as you come indoors or enter a warm car, train, and busses.

No-Scalpel Vasectomies

If you are planning to have a vasectomy as your permanent contraception, then I think you should know this no-scalpel vasectomy procedure called Pro-Vas Occlusion. This no-scalpel vasectomy is said to be the most advance technique of contraception for men which are now being use to block the sperm passage and a procedure that does not require cutting or scalping any part of men’s anatomy. As a result, this will reduced the risk of infection, complications and have less damage to the tissue. Based on research, results shown that most men who have undergone with no-scalpel vasectomies tend to recover quickly and felt lesser pain than the old scalpel method vasectomy. So why suffer?

Ideas on how to make your baby or child fit

It is also important to keep your child or baby fit, in that way they would be able to sleep better and they are more cheerful and easy going when they have the opportunity to run off some energy. At the same time you will also be helping their muscle development and general fitness. Here are some exercise tips I want to share with you for your baby or child.

• Allow your baby to lie and kick his or her legs.
• Make your floor a safe place for a crawler to move around.
• Make time for your toddler to walk with you rather than using a push chair or a buggy.
• Take toddlers and young children to the park to try climbing and swinging or just that they have a safe space to run.
• Find out what’s on for parents and babies at the local leisure centre.
• Take your baby swimming. They can start at a very young age and there is no need to wait until your child has had her immunization.

To take a gum off a child’s hair

Having trouble with gum on your child hair? Well, I have here some solutions you could try to get the gum off your child’s hair. These solutions are very easy and economical too as you can usually see these ingredients in your household.

By using a peanut butter, all you do is put peanut butter on the area around where the gums got stuck, and then rub it into your hair and around the gum, and then you will see the gum crumbles as you rub it. Use your finger to tug gently at it until it comes out, and lastly use a fine tooth comb to get the last bits off. Now if you do not like the smell of the peanut butter on your hair, you can also use coconut or almond oil, baby oil, or sun block. If you do not have this stuff, you can also use a Mayo or butter and use the same procedure. But if you are too lazy to do this procedure, you could always snip it out!

Fatty foods on kids

Parents should be aware that giving your children foods that are high in saturated fat can raise the level of cholesterol in the blood and overtime this increases the chance of developing heart disease. So it is best to be aware what kind of foods are high in saturated fats so you can avoid in giving these to your child or at least cut it down.

• Fatty cuts of meat and meat products such as sausages and pies
• Butter, ghee and lard
• Cream, soured cream and crème fraiche
• Full fat cheese
• Pastry
• Cakes and biscuits
• Some sweet and savoury snacks such as confectionery
• Coconut oil, coconut cream and palm oil

My dream home plan

Building a dream home is probably the biggest step a couple would face, that is why when my husband and I have decided to put our current house on the market, I also make a point to start gathering information’s on starting to build a dream home and luckily, I got a house plan online that fits the budget my husband and I intended for this dream home. I am actually very pleased with it, as it is exactly what I would like it to be, like having a small entrance hall, a downstairs cloakroom, large lounge and a dining kitchen with French door that opens out onto a patio area. I think I did a good job in choosing a dream house plan online as these home plans are far cheaper than going to a local architect especially that my husband and I were on a tight budget.

Newborn babies need vitamin K

We all needed vitamin K to make our blood clot properly so that we won’t bleed too easily and some newborn babies have too little vitamin K. Although this is rare, it can cause them to bleed dangerously into the brain. This is called haemorrhagic disease of new born or Vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB). To reduce that risk, every newborn baby should be offered vitamin K, either by mouth or ejection. These options will all be explained to you by your baby’s doctor prior to giving the said vitamin K.

Know my PD / Pupillary distance recent issue

Recently saw this forum about opticians refusing to give a PD or pupillary distance measurement to people coming into their clinic because they say that these customers will just go to an online shop to purchase one and it's sad to know that this is all about money! You see if a customer walks into the clinic to ask for a PD test, some opticians would say no if a that person will not get a package deal, which is compose of $30 to $45 PD test, $50 to help select the right frame, $50 to verify RX, and $65 to fit it. Now I am just wondering, are customers coming into an optical clinic that would just want a PD check really are obliged to get a pair of their eyeglasses? Do we have the freedom to choose as a customer whether we want to purchase one or not?

Based on what I saw on this forum, most opticians are annoyed with these customers, as they all say that once a customer got their PD, they would all go to this certain online eyeglasses shop where they could get it a lot cheaper. I did have a research about this online shop and found that this zennioptical.com is now the biggest online eyeglasses retailer and they do sell eyeglasses for as low as $8 that is why they are now the number 1 online eyeglasses store. Now if anyone wishes to get a pair of eyeglasses from this online shop, it was explained there that you need a pupillary distance measurement to ensure a proper eyeglass fitment that is why people would then go to an optician to get a PD measurement.

Anyway, since most of the opticians refuse to give and some charges more for a PD measurement, it’s sad to think that their best interest is not at heart. Now, I do understand that an optician too has to be paid for their services, but it does not mean that they would rip off anyone with their very high consultation fee for just a pupillary distance measurement! If they would only offer a reasonable price of PD test to everyone, it would be a wise marketing strategy of getting more customers as well as helping people in this recession time. Also my advice for people wanting a pupillary distance check is that you could do with some research online for a free eye test or a cheap eye test. Note that some giant supermarkets sometimes offer a free PD measurement check with their opticians without an obligation to purchase from their store and usually they do charge but for a lesser amount only.

The PD or Pupillary Distance, is the distance between the pupils of the eyes, center to center, in Millimeters.

Foods to avoid for a baby under 1 year old

I have here some lists of foods that you should avoid in giving to your baby especially when your baby is under 1 year old. The first batch is for babies under the age of 6 months old as these foods could cause allergic reaction or contain harmful bacteria.

* Under 6 months old:

• Eggs

• Fish and shellfish

• Soft and unpasteurised cheeses.

• Wheat based foods which contain gluten - like wheat flour, bread, breakfast cereal and rusks. Also avoid oats and other barley-based foods.

• Nuts and seeds including ground nuts - like peanut butter, and other nut spread.

* Under 1 year old:

• Salt – do not add salt to food for young babies as their kidneys cannot cope with it. Babies will get the right amount of salt they need from the infant formula milk or through breastfeeding if you are breastfeeding your baby.

• Sugar- Do not add sugar to food or drinks you give to your baby, it isn’t necessary. Sugar could encourage a sweet tooth and lead to tooth decay when the first teeth start to come through.

• Honey- should not be given to a baby under 1 year old. According to health professionals, honey can contain a type of bacteria which can produce toxins in the baby’s intestines and can cause serious illness. They said, after the age of 1 the bacteria are not able to grow in the babies intestines.

• Nuts- whole nuts should not be given to children under the age of 5 in case of choking and it could also lead to allergy problems.

Saturated fats are not good for the human’s health as it could raise the level of cholesterol in the blood and could lead to developing heart disease. So, here are some simple things you can do to cut down saturated fats into your food. I got this from a food standard leaflet which I find very useful and think I should also share this with others through my blog.

• By simple choosing lower-fat dairy products – example: try 1% fat milk and look out for yoghurt and cheese that are lower in fat.
• Simple grating cheese instead of slicing – this can mean you eat less of it, which can help you reduce saturated fat intake.
• When shopping compare the labels of cheese to see which of the products contains less fat?
• Simple using leaner mince can reduce saturated fat intake or try using turkey mince which is even leaner.
• By eating chicken without the skin. When cooking chicken, go easy with creamy sauces, try a bit of lemon and some herbs instead.
• Using sunflower oil instead of butter.
• Trim the fat off the meat and try grilling meat instead of frying.
• By simply eating more balance meals. Try lots of fruits and vegetable and plenty of rice potatoes pasta and other starchy foods. These are low in saturated fats, so they make your meals healthier.
• Eat less pastry.
• Healthy snacks when on the go- try apple, and some dried fruits

Ladies hunter wellington boots

Just returned from a camping holiday and I was very impressed with my new hunter wellington boots. These lovely pair of boots has actually help a lot with the rainy days and also the most comfortable pair of wellington boots I have ever worn! During me and my family’s 2 weeks camping holiday, the weather was totally unpredictable, it has rained few times and the campsite has turned a bit muddy, so usually I was wearing my wellies and very happy with it.

I got a lot of compliments wearing this boots due to its lovely colour and since they do really feel very comfortable to wear, I am planning of getting another one and this time I wanted it black! I just think it is handy to have these kinds of boots around, they are ideal for walking on a rainy days, muddy places and even working on barns too!

So, if you are looking forward of buying yourself a pair of wellies, I would recommend that you buy hunter wellies and visit the online shop where I got mine at countryattire.com, they got loads of different colours and styles to choose from with prices ranging from £15 to £139 per boots. Best of all, shipping is totally free of charge!

Feeling depress after childbirth

Like most mothers, I also feel a bit emotional and irrational after child birth and this is what they call baby blues. New mothers usually get this feeling during the first week after child birth, and you might as well be wondering why into a sudden you will be bursting into tears for no apparent reason. Well, worry not as these symptoms are normal and said to only last a few days. I have read in a book that the reason for this baby blues is probably due to the sudden hormone and chemical changes which take place in the body after childbirth. Some other symptom includes feeling irritable, touchy, feeling depressed or anxious but like I said this is something you should not worry as this will only be for a couple of days, once you get used to all the changes, everything gets better as it should be.

Babies and rattles

At the age of four months you need a lot of interactions with your baby as your baby would be starting to get curious with rattling sound and colours. A rattle would be the best toy your baby can have, but first you have to introduce it to him or her by shaking the rattle toy in front of your baby, that way your little would start to interact as he or she starts to hears the sound. This is also a good way to bond with your baby, so while he or she is still very young make the most of it and enjoy your time with your baby, but remember to take it easy and do not rush your baby into something they are not ready for.

Choosing the right baby car seat

For new parents choosing the right car seat would be a challenge and installing it is sometimes a nightmare. I and my husband got our baby her first car seat online since it is a lot cheaper than most baby car seats on the high street. I would say we learned our lesson in buying cheap products on the internet. The car seat seems to be durable, it is new and since it is a universal car seat, it should fit any car. But we had a nightmare installing it, there was not enough instruction on the side and the belt seems to be too long that would not make the seat stable. Anyway, we ended up buying from a car shop where we had them installed it. You see, we found out that even if it is a universal car seat, it is not suitable for our car. Car seats are vital to your baby's safety, so make sure you learn about baby car seats, choose the safest car seats for your baby with car seat buying guides and reviews, and find car seat safety advice from your Guide, a certified car seat technician.

Ideas to make bathing fun for children

Playing with water is fun for all ages, as what I have observe with my little one, she loves to play with water in the bath, sink, in a paddling pool or even just giving her a plastic bowl with water. I have always encourage her to bath every night so to make it more fun for her I gave her a plastic bottle like an old shampoo bottle as kids love this stuff for pouring and squirting. You can also gave your child a plastic tubing, sponge, colander, straws, funnel, spoons and anything you can think of that is unbreakable. These are fun ideas you can try for your child to encourage bathing time, but always remember, never leave to leave your child alone with water!

Children and medicines

These are just basic information for parents and guardians on giving medicines to children, it is however always best to ask a doctor or a pharmacist first before giving such medicine to your child, as dosage can be harmful if it is too much. My husband is a nurse prescriber and I learned this from him.

Aspirin
, this medicine should not be given to children under 16 years of age. According to NHS, this has now been linked with a rare but dangerous illness. You should also take advice from a doctor if you are breastfeeding before taking aspirin.

Paracetamol is safer, but don’t give to children under 3 months without asking your doctor first. Make sure that you got the right strength for your child as overdosing is dangerous. It is always advice to read the label or check with your pharmacist.

Ibuprofen products especially for children can be given for pain and fever in children over 3 months old. You should check the right dose for your child’s age, and avoid if your child has asthma, unless advice by a doctor. Don’t give adult doses of ibuprofen to children under the age of 12.

How to treat a child's fever

It is very important to keep your child cool when he or she has a fever, and here are two things you should do to keep your child cool.

1. Make sure they don't have too many layers of clothes or blanket on.
2. Give them plenty of cool drinks.

A dose of infant paracetamol or ibuprofen liquid may help reduce your child's fever, but remember to read the instructions carefully. You may need a dose four to six hours later. If things don’t get better, it is always best to consult a doctor.

Getting a baby backpack carrier

There are things to consider when you plan to get a backpack carrier for your baby:

1. Baby’s age – follow the manufacturer’s guide as most of this baby or child backpack carrier has a label that says you should only put your baby inside a backpack carrier when the baby can sit-up without any support, or when your baby turns 6 months.
2. Safety – you should check if the baby carrier has no sharp edges that could hurt your child, or small parts that could be swallowed.
3. Quality standards - Buy a baby or child carrier that has passed quality approval and carry your counties safety standards.

My baby loves backpack carrier as she would just sleep the whole time in it whiles me and my husband goes hiking. However the first backpack carrier we bought for her got recalled by the manufacturer due to safety issues. We got fully refunded but we have actually used it for a while before they recall the item and sad to say we did not have any clue that it is actually a danger to our baby’s health. It was said that the rain cover could actually suffocate the baby, and the little knots are not safe as they could be easily taken off and swallowed by a child. I guess me and my husband was lucky that nothing happens to our baby during those times we used the said backpack carrier. So from then we make sure that we only buy quality approved items for my little one.

Washing stuff toys

To all mommy readers, you don’t need to go to a laundry shop and have your stuff toys dry clean. Cleaning your child’s stuff toys does not need to be costly, all you need to do is put the stuff toy inside a pillow case and pin it or tie it. Wash it in the washing machine with a washing powder and pour in a little amount of fabric conditioner, then set on a gentle wash. It does not need long to wash it, just set it on a quick wash and then spin dry. Once finish, you can hung it, to let it dry properly. After you have done it, you can really see the big difference as it will smell good and look like new. This method is also good in washing trainers’ shoes. However if your shoes it is too dirty, I would recommend that you wash it by hand.

Mom’s summer fashion advice

As a mother, I always make sure that everything is child friendly and that includes choosing the appropriate clothes and right accessories for me. Fashion could sometime be difficult; as I have to make sure I do not wear clothes that have a lot of beads, strings and sharp colourful decor that might harm my child when I am holding her. You see most toddlers and babies would just take and swallow little bits and pieces that they can grab onto. Babies are also known to have sensitive skin, so I also make sure that my clothes does not have any metal decor attached on. Aside from this, most mothers also worry about the postnatal body figure, but hey, everything can be sorted out, not that you have to go onto liposuction but you can get some things that could add up a bit of a curve but getting the right clothes that matches your body figure. Most mothers are usually curvy and they call it as hour glass figure. So if you have this figure, you would definitely look great in that emphasize your waist line. A wrap dress would be ideal or just enhance your dress with a big belt. Long blouse with big belt would also look great with denim skirt. There are so many things you can do to look fabulous this summer, and by mixing and matching you clothing’s, you do not need to get a loads of clothes filing in your closet. Try to get soft fabric clothes as these are ideal for the summer and also good when you are holding your baby. Well, this is my mom’s summer fashion advice, but if you have any other ideas that you think would be great, go for it and prove to everyone that mom’s are great in fashion!

Foods to avoid for Under 6 months

I have here lists of food’s you should avoid for your child if you choose to feed him or her under the age of 6 months old as they could cause allergic reaction or contain harmful bacteria:

• Wheat -based foods which contain gluten = like wheat flour, bread, breakfast cereal and rusks. Also avoid oats and other barley-based foods.

• Nuts and seeds including ground nuts = like peanut butter, and other nut spread.

• Eggs

• Fish and shellfish

• Soft and unpasteurised cheeses.

Foods to avoid for a baby

Here are some lists of foods that you should avoid in giving to your baby especially when your baby is under 1 year old.

Do babies know their reflection?

Many wonder if babies know their reflection on a mirror as they always react on their reflection. Well, according to Charles Darwin on one of his books, a baby does not know their reflection until they turn 2 yrs old. They tend to react on it by smiling or staring because they think it is another baby in front. I saw a television program last year conducting baby studies and they did this test that you can also try if your baby knows his or her reflection. They call it “The lipstick test”; first they put a lipstick mark on the forehead of a 1 year old and put the baby in front of a big mirror. The baby was sitting in front of the mirror smiling and touch the mirror, then crawled to the side of it and then look at the back of the mirror, seems that the baby was thinking it is another baby in front, because at the end of the mirror, the reflection just disappear, so the baby look at the back of the mirror trying to find that one she saw awhile ago. The next test was a 2 yr old, first they secretly put a lipstick mark on the forehead of the 2yr old, then face the toddler in the mirror, the toddler looking at his reflection, he then touch his forehead with the lipstick mark on, so that means he know it is his reflection. I did try the lipstick test when my little girl was about 18 months old, and she was not aware of the lipstick, she just keeps smiling at the mirror and then looks at the back of the mirror. Now that she is 2 yrs old, she definitely knows her reflection!

Swine flu vaccination programme

My 2 year old daughter just got her swine flu vaccination last Friday 26th of march 2010 this is due to the Government vaccination program in which children among the ages of six months and five years should get vaccinated for swine flu (H1N1). According to the NHS, this age group was identified as the next priority group for the vaccine because they are more likely to be hospitalized if they fall ill with swine flu. They also have a high rates of admission to critical care and sadly, there have also been some deaths. At first I was hesitant to have her immunized with this H1N1 vaccine, because of the I feared for the side effects it may cause on my childs health and I thought that the flu has long gone as I have not heard any news of it on television, but I then realized that it she might as well just have it in case of another swine flu outbreak. I was surprised that she did not cry when she got the injection on her arm and as of my main concern of this vaccine having a side effect on my child, it did not happen, my daughter has not had any side effects or what so ever.

Protecting your child against mosquito bites

As we all know mosquito has been the cause of malaria and this is probably the biggest concerns of parents travelling with youngsters abroad, particularly in tropical countries. When we went on holiday to the Philippines, my husband and I did a good job in preventing our child from getting bitten by mosquitoes by using clothes that covers her arms and legs especially at night time. I also make sure that she had an insect repellent on her skin; make sure you get a mosquito lotion that is suitable for your child’s age. You see, there isn’t an immunization against malaria , but doctors will be able to advice you or your child to take anti-malaria drugs however, anti-malaria drugs do not provide complete protection, so what you can do is just take extra precautions as what we did.

To encourage a baby to eat

I did these healthy eating tricks when my baby is around 12 months to 18 months old and it usually works.
• Serve the food on different coloured plates.
• By disguising food, by blending or grating the food that she wouldn't eat and mix it with her favourite food.
• Let her watch her favourite TV show or movie while eating.
• And encourage her to eat by eating together.

Now that my daughter is 2 years old, this doesn’t work anymore. She usually eats breakfast and does not have any interest in eating lunch and dinner. After 2 months of trying to feed her 3 times a day, and her constant refusal to eat, I have finally decided not to force her to eat. Anyway, she drinks milk 3 or 4 times a day and what I do now is that I usually gave her a sliced banana or carrots and kiddie cereal for her snacks.

Things to do with food safety

Since young children are vulnerable to bacteria, it is very important to store, prepare and cook food safely. Also in keeping the kitchen and utensils clean at all times.

These are just basic things you should do:
• Wash your hands before preparing food and after touching raw meat.
• Wash all fruits and vegetables before eating
• When re-heating food, make sure that it is piping hot all the way through. Always remember to allow the food to cool slightly before giving to your child to avoid burning.
• Teach your child to wash his or her hands before eating, also after touching pets and after going to the toilet.

Toddler tantrums

Based on children studies, tantrums may start at around 18 months and mostly common on 2 yrs old, and once a child can talk more, tantrums often lessens. Most reason is that around this age children often want to express themselves more than they are able. They feel frustrated when an adult could not understand them and then this frustration comes out as tantrum. The best thing to do is try to ask the child and make her or him repeat the word until you get what he or she is trying to tell you. When a child starts shouting at you, do not shout back, you have to look into your child’s eyes and in a calm voice tone, tell your child to calm down, then ask again what he or she wants. For younger children the reasons are mostly feeling tired or hungry, or sometimes maybe jealousy or attention. When tantrum is starting, try to find an instant distractions like looking out of the window. What I usually do with my 2 year old when she starts her tantrum and very upset, I usually hold her quite firmly, until the tantrum passes, then talk to her in a calm voice. This really helps!

Fever temperature

This information might be useful for new parents like me on how to detect if a child has a fever. Using a thermometer a fever is a temperature over 37.5c. Fevers are quite common in young children, but they are usually mild. If your child’s face feels hot to the touch and they look red or flushed, he or she may have a fever. If your child has a temperature of 39c or above, or has a fit call the doctor immediately, and if you can't contact your doctor, it is best to trust your instict and go to the nearest hospital.

To keep children safe on roads

It is very important for parents and children to be aware about the risk of road accidents, as this type of accident is one of the most common cause of death among children. So here are some simple safety tips for parents about children and roads.

• Never let a child on or near roads alone as young children do not understand the danger of traffic.

• Hold your child’s hand when you are near roads. Walking reins are useful for toddlers.

• Teach your child to cross the roads safely by always crossing safely yourself and explaining what you are doing but do not expect any child under the age of eight to cross a road alone.
