Types of milk that is not suitable for babies and young children

For under 1 year old:

Whole cows’ milk- is not suitable as a main drink until your baby is one year old. The reason for this as I was told by a health visitor is that it does not contain sufficient iron and other nutrients to the baby’s needs.

Goats’ and sheep’s milk and milk based on rice or oats- these are also not suitable for under 1 year old as they do not contain much iron and other nutrients to keep a baby healthy. Providing they are pasteurised, they can be use once a baby is one year old.

For under 2 years old:

Simi-skimmed milk- is not suitable for children under 2, but can be introduced from 2 years if a child is a good eater and has a varied diet. The main reason for this is that there is less fat, calories and vitamin A found in Simi-skimmed milk.

Under 5 years old:

Skimmed milk- is not suitable for children under 5 because, because toddlers need lots of energy from the food they eat, and skimmed milk has less in it.
