My toddler loves Chuggington

This is my little Chloe’s favourite cartoon show from Cbeebies. The show tells a story about how the train station runs and teamwork around them. The three main characters’ are the trainees named:

• Wilson- red engine

• Brewster- yellow with blue colour engine

• Koko- green with purple engine

Each day, they are able to perform task and at the end of the show, they usually find out that they can solve the problem easier by helping each other. I would say this is a great show for all toddlers! Love the fun characters, lessons learned from each daily task and the cheerful song that my little girl always sings along every time she hears it on the television.

The Amazing Toddler Spiderman Costume

I really feel that I am obliged to make a review of this costume as so far this is the best designed toddler costume I have seen! For a start this would look cute for either a boy or a girl (planning to get my little Chloe one), but I got this for my little nephew Karl (Chloe’s cousin) as a surprise present when we go for a visit to see him and the whole family this spring.

Anyway here is my review:

The costume is made out of polyester clothing, but do not get me wrong, as it is of quite good quality and it does not look cheap! It's a jumpsuit which features realistic effect padded muscles in the chest and on the arms. The pads on the arms and chest by the way feels soft, light and squashy, and the jumpsuit itself is surprisingly quite strong clothing material! I would say this would definitely keep a toddler snug and warm on a mild or cold weather.

Was actually pleased on how well made the costume is, tell you, this is one of the best Spiderman costumes I have seen online, and what makes it different from the others is that this Spiderman costume has a larger spider print on the chest, the face mask got a larger eye wholes too with an elastic trim around the back of the head which would make it adjustable for any head sizes. Oh, another good thing I notice about this is that the mask does not cover the whole face, which means a toddler can breath in and out properly and avoid the danger of suffocation.

As far as sizing is concern, this is pretty much true to its size, got a T2 size and have asked the exact measurement of my nephew from his mom, and spot on! It is just perfect for an average size 2 years old toddler. I am overall very happy with this; its is not pricey and it looks great too! I think any child wearing this would get tons of compliments especially that The Amazing Spiderman movie is soon to be out on cinema. This is truly an amazing toddler costume and would definitely recommend this to anyone.

1st Dental Check and Caring for your child's teeth

Chloe just had her first dental check at the age of 4 and like any other child her, she was a little nervous of seeing the dentist for the first time. Although this is not the first time she has been to the dental clinic as I often take her with me during my annual dental routine check, I can still feel that she is a little bit concern and nervous about seeing the dentist. At first she insisted that she will not see the dentist and she got a lot of reasons for it, but when I told her that there is a sticker badge waiting for her and a surprise inside the dental room, she agreed to go along. The dentist and the dental nurse were very friendly, offered her a selection of sun glasses when she gets in the room and was chatting with me and her. I was actually surprised that Chloe responded well and after the dental check, she was given a sticker badge which makes her very proud!

Anyway, here is some advice from the dentist of how to care of a child’s teeth, well these are the only 3 important things I can remember:

• Keep down the number of times each day that your child eats or drinks something sugary.

• Acidic drinks such as fruit juices and squashes should only be given with meals and not on their own.

• Brush your child’s teeth thoroughly twice each day, using a small pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.

• Let the child sees you are brushing your teeth, best to brush at the same time your child is brushing her or his teeth.

• Go on helping your child to brush until you are sure that he or she is old enough. They recon until the age of seven.

It is recommended that you should take your child to the dentist for an annual routine check, even if he or she does not have any tooth decay problem, as this would help maintain your child's teeth and gums healthy.

Cleaning a FurReal friend toy

If your child got a toy like this, here is a simple way on cleaning this type of toy. Since these toys are furry, gently brush the fur with a cloth or soft brush to loosen any dirt. Then use a slightly damp cloth to remove stains.

• Do not put it on the washing machine.

• Do not submerge in water.

• Do not use detergent or stain removers on fur.

• Do not get wet, to remove the stains , use only a slightly damp cloth on the fur.

• To prevent staining fur, wipe off the dirt immediately.

• If the toy gets wet, remove the batteries and dry the fur, and once the fur is dry, replace the batteries.

• Tell your child to avoid spilling food or beverage on thee toy.

• Tell your child not to throw the toy or kick and not to push sharp objects through the speaker openings.

• Do not leave the toy on direct sunlight as high temperatures will destroy the mechanism.

Presents for a 4 year old girl

These are some of the presents my little Chloe got on her 4th Birthday and I would recommend these to all little girls who are just about her age.

1. Peppa Pig Fun Phonics- My little girl loves Peppa pig and with this, she can play and learn with Peppa, with its Fun Phonics module. There are twenty six light-up keys with letters, pictures and numbers to help your little one get to grips with sounds, phonics, spelling, colours, letters and numbers. Disney Toy Story Talking Slinky Dog

Got this talking slinky dog for my daughters 4th birthday at Disney shop for £20 and she loves it! The toy is made out of though plastic with a spring metal body with wheels under his paws and a sting in between the eyes for pulling along. It came with a battery already installed in and the toy has 10 phases from the film, like the barking sound, “I know you were right all along”, and the phrase “I love being a toy”, so far these is the only phrase I can remember, and there are several more!

The toy looks like the exact size from the film as Andy’s Slinky Dog, the Height is 17cm, length 27cm when un-stretched and the metal spring body got a string inside that would also stretched to a certain length and goes back to the normal size. It does not tangle although the metal spring does show a little sign of being stretched in just a 5 days of being played with, but overall it is a good toy. My little Chloe does plays with it a lot and happy with her springy dog, so I would say this toy is worth the money and would recommend it to any toy story fan out there.

Babies first teeth

When is the time when babies get their first teeth? My little Chloe had her first teeth at around 6 months, but some varies as I do know a baby that does not have a tooth until he is 1 year old and according to the doctor this is still normal. For most babies that I have seen, the first tooth would usually grown on the front at the bottom and by two and a half years old most of them have their primary teeth already.

Teaching your child the alphabet

This is just a tip on how to teach your child the alphabet and help him or her memorize the letters from A to Z.

• Make the alphabet song a lullaby to your child when he or she is going to sleep.

You will soon notice that your child will be able to memorize the song and will sing it with you in a week or two.

• Buy an alphabet poster and tape or post it where your child can easily see it every day. Then sing the alphabet song to your child and point to these letters while singing.

• Once your child memorizes the alphabetical order, you can make some test by making it a fun game for him/her. Cover one letter on the poster with your hand and let your child guess, which letter it is. Cheer every time he/she gets the right answer.

Blinds and curtains both have the same purpose, and that is to give people inside the house a bit of privacy, although some might want it for security reasons as well. For whatever purpose, did you know that this is probably one common thing a couple would argue when moving into a new home? Like most couples, my husband and I have been to the same situation. The problem is, I like having curtains and my husband prefers blinds, and we both do not like having them both (blinds and curtains together in a window), so we ended-up not having anything covering the window for a week until my husband’s mother came over and handed me a set of curtain to try it on our main living room window. Guess what? It looks great!

Starting to shop for Christmas presents? Well, if you plan to give toys for children it is always best to check if the toy is safe for children of such age and check out these guides:

• It is best to buy toys that carry the standards of your country. It usually carries a symbol like, CE, Lion mark or kite mark.

• Take care if you buy toys from car boot sale, market stalls or second hand toys as these may not confirmed to safety standards and could be dangerous.

• Take safety measures such as ‘not suitable for under 36 months’ seriously (0-3 sign). This sign warns that the toy is unsuitable for a child under three because of small parts.

• Check that the toy has no sharp edges that could hurt a child, small parts that a child could put in his or her mouth and choke on.

My cousin in Ontario recently got divorced after 2 years of waiting for the papers to be legalized. Making Toffee Apples

Here is how to make super-sweet coating toffee apples, this would make a perfect treat for children for this festive season!

Good for 6 persons

• Wash 6 eating apples and dry with kitchen paper.

• Insert a lolly stick through each core. Grease a baking paper with butter and put on a baking tray. Put a bowl of cold water in the fridge.

• Put 450g white (cane) sugar in a pan with 50g unsalted butter. 2tsp cider vinegar and 1tbsp golden syrup. Add 150ml cold water and heat, stirring gently, until the sugar has completely dissolved.

• Bring to boil, then boil for 10 minutes until it turns into toffee. To test if its ready, drop a small piece into the bowl of cold water. If it goes hard immediately, then it is ready.

• Remove from the heat and dip the apples in (one at a time), swirling them around gently until coated. Put on a grease paper and leave to set.

Breakfast for toddlers

Rusk, banana, oats and milk- this is my little girl’s daily breakfast and she likes it!

To prepare this, you need to:

• Pour milk on a bowl (just estimate how much your toddler can consume).

• Then put about 3 table spoons of oats onto the milk on the bowl and mix.

• Put it in the microwave oven for about 2 minutes.

• After that, take it out of the microwave and put 1 piece of rusk onto it.

• Crush the rush and mix it.

• Slice a banana in half. Using the half of the sliced banana, mashed it in with the rusk, oats and milk.

• Let it cool and serve!

I am a plus size and the perfect way to shop for plus size clothing and shoes for me is to go online! Now I do not have a preferred online shop but for this season I found some really good bargains at Jessica London’s website. The Plus size clothing and shoes are lovely and mostly at a discounted rate, like this Comfort view 'Rush' leather boots from their plus size shoes and boots collection which is now about 40% off the original price, a bargain for a real leather boots!

Now, I do not have this yet as I am still waiting at my order, however my sister already got her pair of boots and I absolutely love it! She does too and said it is very comfortable and that she could wear it every day for hours when she is in school. What I like about boots are that aside from being real leather, the height of the boots are just perfect that I can picture myself wearing it with either skirts or jeans. It can be worn for any occasions especially on the cooler days ahead and believe me, it does look stunning! Keeping toddlers busy

One good way of keeping toddlers busy is making playtime fun for them; at the same time, make sure they are learning while playing, so here are some of the things you can try to make playtime fun for them while in the house.

• Play dough - My little girl loves playing with this, and it takes her about 30 minutes to 1 hour busy creating different things with the dough.

• Junk modeling- you can collect all sorts of cardboard boxes, cartons, yogurt pots, milk bottle tops, and tissue paper cardboard tubes, and give these to your little one with a sticky tape or glue, so he or she can create something out of that! You can set an example by making a robot out of these boxes, or make binoculars out of the tubes from tissue paper rolls.

• Pretend cooking- Use a bowl and spoons for measuring out and mixing small quantities of real ingredients (flour, rice, sugar, custard powder and put out in egg cups or bowls. Use water to mix.

• Dressing Up- you can collect old bags, gloves, scarves, nighties, length of materials, tea towels, old curtains. Take care that these clothes do not contain loose cords, strings, or ribbons that could wrap around their neck and cause strangulation. Paper plates or a cut up cereal pockets make good mask! All you have to do is cut slits for the eyes and tie on with a rubber string.

• Drawing and painting- Use crayons, felt tips, powder paint. Add washing up liquid and water to powder paint for a thicker paint. You can use old envelopes slit open and the inside the cereal pockets for paper.

These would surely give your child a lot of fun!

Taking your baby out in cold weather

It is now autumn and when taking your baby out and about, it is important that you make sure your baby is wrapped up warm because babies do chill easily and could easily catch a cold too! Depending on how cold it is, make sure your baby wears a cardigan or a coat. You could also bring a blanket, which will come handy when your baby is asleep in a pushchair or pram. Also, do remember to take some clothing off when you get into a warm place so that your baby doesn’t then overheat, even he or she is asleep.

Do I need to put salt on my child's food

Do I need to put salt on my child’s food? I also ask the same question onto my baby’s health visitor and she answered no. There is no need to add salt or sodium chloride to your child’s food because there is enough naturally present in foods. What happens when a child has too much salt intake? When you begin to give salty foods to your child this will then lead to a liking for salty foods and contribute towards high blood pressure in later life.

The FSA suggests babies under six months old should have less than 1 gram of salt a day and those aged seven to 12 months one gram a day. But since salt is already present in our daily food, even in milk, it is so hard to know how much has our child has eaten in a day, so it is just best to avoid it if possible.

Actually, the whole family will benefit if you gradually reduce the amount of salt in your cooking. Also you should keep salt off the table and limit the amount of salty food like crisp, savoury snacks, and some mixes that your child has.

Mumps do spread

Some mothers do not know but yes, mumps does spread easily. I remember on my little girl’s 2nd birthday a little girl arrived with mumps, so I ask the mother politely to leave the party with her child as there are many children at the party that could get the said virus from her daughter. Her daughter no longer have the fever, but the swollen jaw is still visible so I think it is still not safe for her to be with other children.

Anyway is some information about mumps, I learned some of this from the nurse who gave my little girl the MMR shots and some from the National health services website.

Mumps is an airborne virus which can lead to fever, headache, and painful, swollen glands in the face, neck and jaws. It can result in permanent deafness, viral meningitis (swelling of the lining of the brain) and encephalitis. Rarely this can also cause painful swelling of the testicles in males and the ovaries in females. This said virus usually last about 7 to 10 days.

• sharing utensils, such as cups, cutlery or plates with an infected person

As a parent, I think it very important that we should set as a good example to our children when it comes to road and traffic awareness. Explain to them what traffic is all about, traffic light colours, stop and looking both ways before crossing the road. Anyway, I have here a few very good tips for parents with regards to safety on roads with children.

• Never let a child on or near the roads alone, as young children do not understand the dangers of traffic.

• Hold your child’s hand when you’re near roads. When you’re with a toddler, a walking rein would be very useful.

A child suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is what they call over active child or hyperactive child. Now hyperactivity may require treatment but here are some very good tips I got from my sister who has a hyper active child. Here are those tips you may try:

• Keep to a daily routine as much as you can. This can be important if your child is restless or difficult and could help you stay calmer and stand up better to the strain.

• Make giving your child time and attention a part of the routine. In different ways your child may be demanding your attention most of the day, if not most of the night as well. Make a certain time each day to give your child all your attention.

• Avoid difficult situation as much as you can. Example, keeping shopping trips short.

• Try to get out every day to a place where your child can run around and really let go.

• Avoid giving your child cola drinks, tea and coffee, as these drinks all contains caffeine.

Now these are just tips in helping you manage your child’s over active behaviour, however if these do not help, I would suggest that you talk to a doctor as your child may require some treatment.

Safety Razors Shaving Tips

My husband (Chloe’s dad) shaves almost every day and he had a somewhat routine when doing it, he usually shave his face after a shower, in the sink, with all those creams and hydration techniques to avoid razor burns. Well, in 5 years being with him, I think I only saw him with razor burns once and that has something to do with the new crappy razors I got for him. Anyway, I think he has a good shaving routine, so I ask him if I could share his shaving tips here on my blog and he said yes, so here it is!

1. Hydrate your skin by having a shower and using a shower gel to take away all the oil, dirt and dead skin cells on your face.

2. If you are in a rash and do not have time to shower, you can hydrate your skin by washing it with warm water and a body wash for at least 2 to 3 minutes.

3. Then apply a shaving cream or a gel in a circular motion on your face where you want to shave.

4. Using a safety razor, only shave in direction of the hair growth and on a slow light stroke. It is important that you do not put too much pressure on your skin as this would create irritation on your skin.

5. Apply a shaving cream again if you wish to shave your face the second time.

6. At the end of every shave, always rinse your razor and take out excess water and store in a cool and dry place.

7. Rinse your face with cool and dry water and gently pat dry your face with a face towel.

8. Lastly use an after shave to cool and moisturize your skin.

These steps might look a bit long, but honestly it only take about 3 to 5 minutes to get it all done and you will soon get the hang of it!

This is probably the most common rash you will find in babies and toddlers, especially around the age of 18 months. I have been doing a lot of research before and found some useful information on preventing diaper rash on my little one. These are the things that will help prevent diaper or nappy rash on babies:

By changing the diaper as soon as you can when it becomes wet or soiled. By cleaning the whole diaper area thoroughly. Wipe the baby from front to back. Use a mild soap with plain water or a gentle baby wipes. Make sure that you rinse the soap and pat dry before placing a new baby diaper on your baby. It is also best to lay your baby in a towel and leave the diaper off for as long and as often as you can to let fresh air get to the skin.

Sometime rashes can lead into infection, so it is somehow important that you should keep your baby dry and clean at all time.

These are just some of the things I always do when buying a pair of shoes or boots for my little girl. Now, I am aware that children’s feet grow very fast and it is important that the bones grow straight, so here are some of those things to look out when buying footwear for toddlers.

• Buy footwear that is made of natural materials, example: Leather, cotton, or canvas as these materials breathe. What I understand plastic shoe is that they are not really advisable for toddlers as plastic shoes or boots make feet perspire and can cause fungal infections and abrasions.

• When buying it from a shop, have your child’s feet measured for each new pair of shoes. What I know is that a child under 4 years of age should have their feet measured every 6-8 weeks.

• When buying over the internet, I have here a measurement guide, got this from the online shop where I usually get my little girl’s footwear. I also use a tape measure to measure her feet and look it up on this guide.

• Lastly, it is best not to keep shoes for the best, as your child may outgrow these without proper wear.

Children waking up during the night

They say that half of all children under 5 go through periods of waking up at night. Some would go back to sleep on their own and others will cry. My little one cries every time she wakes up at night and that keeps happening most of the night until she is 2 years of age. Well, that is when I figure out what was the reason why she keeps waking up. There are two reasons why she keeps waking up at night and one of those is that she is hungry. What I did is make sure she has eaten something before she goes to sleep, a cereal or sometimes if she refuse to eat, I would give her a warm milk to keep her full until the morning. During the winter, she does it again, but not because she is hungry, but because she is cold so I make sure she wears long sleeve pyjamas with sock on and that solves the problem! Hope this helps.

What to do if your child is burnt or scalding

I got this from a book of emergency first aid that was given to me a long time ago from a health clinic and I think as a parent we should know something about first aid and what to do in case of emergencies. Now here is what to do in case you find your child screaming out of pain from a burn or scald.

• Immediately put the burn or scald under a running cold water to reduce the heat in the skin.

Do this for at least 10 minutes. If the running water is not available, immerse the burn or scald in the cold water or any cooling fluid, such as milk or other cold drinks can be used.

• Cover the burn or scald with a clean, non-fluffy cloth like a clean cotton pillow case or linen tea towel or cling film. This cuts down the danger of infection.

• If clothes are stuck to the skin, don’t try to take them off.

• Depending on the severity of the burn or scald, see your doctor or call an ambulance or take your child to the hospital. You should seek medical help for anything other than a very small burn.

• Do not put butter, oil or ointment on a burn or scald. It only has to be clean off again before treatment can be given.

• Don’t prick any blister. You’ll delay healing and let the germs in.

Switching from bottles to cups

My little girl is now 3 ½ years old and has just got off the habit of drinking milk from a baby milk bottle. She had been using a lidded feeding cup from around 7 month’s drinking water and juices with it but she refuses to drink milk on it. When she gets to 2 years of age, she started to drink water and juices on the cup without a lid, but still refuse to drink the milk on it. So practically at this age my toddler is still drinking toddler’s formula milk, but she does take cow’s milk on a cereal.

Recently I noticed that she likes drinking little cartoon juices with straws on it, so it had given me an idea to use colourful bendy straws on a cup of milk for her to a least try to sip it. She is now 3 ½ years old and has been eating well, so I have totally decided to give her cow’s milk instead of formula milk and that she should be drinking it on a cup.

So got her a box of colourful bendy straws and the next day when she asks for milk, I told her I forgot to buy her usual milk, but there is a cow’s milk on the refrigerator and it is just the same as her usual milk, the only thing is that cow’s milk should be on a cup. Showed her the straws and she liked it! She had a sip on it, but did not drink it all. It took her 3 days to get used to it and now, she is really drinking cow’s milk on a cup, with a straw. Over all, I am happy with this development and I am now thinking of a next move, and that is to totally let her drink from a cup without straws!

This is what I noticed with my little girl, at the age of 1 she starts to drink less milk as already is eating solid foods like vegetables, cooked meats, noodles, and some finger foods which does keep her full most of the day. I did worry for a bit, but when I started to switch her milk to a toddler’s milk, it does have a label at the back that says after 12 months it is recommended that a child drinks around 500ml of milk per day. So usually that would be around 2 to 3 servings of milk in a day. If you are still worried, cheese can also be a good alternative. Hope this helps.

Cup or beaker: Which one is best for toddlers?

Ever wonder which one is best for your child? Is it a cup or a beaker? Well, I did ask the same question to a health visitor, the nurse that was assigned to come and check my baby’s health and development every month and I got this information from her.

A free flow lidded beaker is better than a bottle or beaker with teat, for the reason that drinks flow very slowly through a teat and drinking can take a long time. This means your child spends a lot of time with teat on the mouth which may delay speech development and damage his or her teeth, especially if your child is drinking sweetened milk. It is also advisable to move on from a lidded beaker to drinking from a cup as soon as your child is ready. A non-spill or valve cups are not recommended as they encourage longer drinking times, so use a lidded free flow cups instead, so your toddler will learn to sip.

Whether its cups or college, the more you know, the better off you'll be. Classes through early childhood education online degree would be beneficial to any family.

1 day - 1 month : New born hearing screening

This test is usually offered to babies born with-in areas that are implementing newborn hearing screening programme. My little one had her's on the hospital the day after she was born at Calderdale Royal Hospital Halifax West Yorkshire UK.

1-3 days : Newborn Physical examination

Your baby will be check to screen his/her hearth, hips and eyes, and testes in boys. This also includes a general physical examination. This was also given at the hospital the day after my little girl was born.

5-8 days : Newborn bloodspot

A heel-prick sample is offered to test for phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyroidism for all babies. Screening for sickle cell disorders and cystic fibrosis is also being implemented. This test was offered and conducted by the health visitor at home.

6-36 months : Hearing assessment at 6-8 months

General Review between 8 and 36 months

An infant destruction test will be offered at 6-8 months if your child has not previously had a newborn screening test. This will be phased out when the newborn screening program has been fully implemented. At 8 -12 months and around 2 and 3 years, a review may be offered to asses your child's general well being.

3 1/2 - 4 1/2 years : School Entry vision screening, height and weight, dental screening and hearing screening.

Your child will be offered a review to asses general well-being.

• keep a good firewall on your home computer

• don't use the same password on all websites

• refuse to give personal information to any company that emails or calls you unexpectedly

• keep your credit card within view when paying at restaurants or shops

• don't respond to emails that seem to be from your bank asking you to 're-enter' your personal details; your bank will not ask you to do that

• don't buy online unless you see the golden padlock on the payments page, and a web address beginning with 'https'

• install all security updates and 'patches' offered by your computer software company.

Squashes, fizzy drinks, flavored milk and juice drinks- filling up on too much of these drinks can cause poor appetite, poor weight gain and in toddlers loose stools. These are unsuitable for young babies. If you want to give squashes, flavored milk, and juices drinks keep them for mealtime in a feeder cup and make sure all juices are diluted well. Fizzy drinks are very acidic and can damage a toddler’s tooth enamel and most health professionals do not recommend fizzy drinks to toddlers. I am a mother and honestly I sometimes give fizzy drinks to my 3 year old, but I think moderation is always the best way.

Baby and herbal drinks- these are also not recommended as advised by a health visitor as they contain sugars and their use is not recommended.

Tea and coffee- not suitable for babies and young children as they can reduce iron absorption and if sugar is added it could contribute tooth decay.

Types of milk that is not suitable for babies and young children

For under 1 year old:

Whole cows’ milk- is not suitable as a main drink until your baby is one year old. The reason for this as I was told by a health visitor is that it does not contain sufficient iron and other nutrients to the baby’s needs.

Goats’ and sheep’s milk and milk based on rice or oats- these are also not suitable for under 1 year old as they do not contain much iron and other nutrients to keep a baby healthy. Providing they are pasteurised, they can be use once a baby is one year old.

For under 2 years old:

Simi-skimmed milk- is not suitable for children under 2, but can be introduced from 2 years if a child is a good eater and has a varied diet. The main reason for this is that there is less fat, calories and vitamin A found in Simi-skimmed milk.

Under 5 years old:

Skimmed milk- is not suitable for children under 5 because, because toddlers need lots of energy from the food they eat, and skimmed milk has less in it.

My 3 year old Chloe received a Topsy and Tim Collection book from her aunt, and she loved it! The book itself has so many interesting adventures and my daughter can visualize herself as Topsy because most of the story has actually been done and experience by my little one, like Camping, going to the dentist, swimming, at the farm, going in an airplane, birthday party, going to the zoo, on a train, going to the doctor and even going green which has something to do with recycling which is what she often see when I am sorting out cans, papers, old clothes and so on. The book illustrations are good, and the stories are simple yet fun, that even I love reading it to her every night. She does like books and got some other collections like Disney fairytales stories and some animals’ story but these Topsy and Tim books are her favourite. Well what can I say, my daughter and I love these books and would recommend it to other children, I think from age 2 and up.

It is almost summertime and hopefully would be getting a lot of sunshine this year, so I am sharing some tips here on keeping children safe in the sun when on a day out, picnic, on the beach, kayaking and some other summer time family fun activities. Here are those tips:

• Keep your child out of the sun between 11 and 3pm when the sun is highest and most dangerous.

• Keep babies under 6 months of age out of the sun altogether.

• Make the most of shades, like picnicking under a tree, on the beach with a little tent or a beach umbrella.

• Don’t let children run around all day in a swimsuit or without any clothes on.

• Cover your child up in a loose baggy cotton clothes such as oversized t-shirts with sleeves.

• In particular, protect your child’s shoulders, neck, and back of the neck when they are playing as these are the most common areas for sunburn.

• Let your child wear a legionnaire’s hat or a floppy hat with a wide brim that shades the face and neck.

• Cover the exposed parts of your child’s skin with sunscreen, even on cloudy or overcast days. Use one with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or above and which is effective against UVA and UVB. Re-apply often.

• Protect your child’s eyes with sunglasses with an ultraviolet filter.

• Use waterproof sun block if your child is swimming.

What to do with toddler diarrhoea

I used get a little concerned every time my little girl gets diarrhoea, but after a chat with a doctor, I found out that some children between the ages of 1 and 5 pass frequently, smelly, loose stools with mucus or bits of vegetables in them. Usually these children are otherwise perfectly healthy and growing fine and this type of diarrhoea is known as ‘toddler diarrhoea’. Anyway if your toddler diarrhoea for which there is no obvious cause then the following would help.

• Giving less fluid between meals and at meals if your child drinks a lot.

• Try to introduce more foods with fat such as full fat yoghurt, cheese and butter.

• If your child is having foods with a lot of fibre, or wholemeal foods, reduce these. You can give white bread, pasta, and white rice instead of whole meal varieties.

The doctor also added that diarrhoea is not worrying and that toddlers should not be given anti-diarrhoea drugs unless it is prescribe by a doctor.

I have just potty trained my little girl at daytime but during the night I make sure that she wears a nappy or diaper as I have read on an article that it usually takes a child a little longer to stay dry during the night than staying dry during the day, and the reason for this is that the child cannot respond yet to the sensation of having a full bladder whiles asleep either by waking up and then going to the toilet, or holding until morning. It was said that most children do learn how to do this between the ages of 3 to 5, but it is estimated that a quarter of 3 year old wet the bed at night time and 1 in 6 five year olds wet the bed at night time. They will eventually grow out of it, so for the meantime I put my little girl on a nappy so she will have a good night sleep and so am I.

Children's Nightmare

My 3 year old woke up around 2 am this morning screaming due to a nightmare. I Think it might be from the film she saw last night, although it was not a horror film, it is still a little scary as it was about 2 siblings who took a safari tour in Africa and got stranded in the wild with some big hungry Lions, waiting for them to come out of the vehicle. The driver of the safari truck got eaten by the lion, and I saw my little girl’s face really got scared when she saw it.

Anyway, this morning I did a little research online about night terrors in children and found out that this normally do not have an importance and that a child usually grows out of them. These nightmares often begin between the ages 18 months and 3 years but these are not usually a sign of disturbance, so there is really nothing to worry about. After a nightmare a child usually need comforting and reassuring, so it might also help to have a little talk about it and give your child a drink of water before he or she goes back to sleep.

My Blogger’s missing post has been restored

On May 11, 2011 blogger had some technical issues which have resulted to missing blog posts from bloggers all over the world. During that day, I had 3 blog posts missing and two were restored on the 13th of May 2011. On the 14th of May 2011, Blogger’s technical manager Eddie Kessler published an announcement on Blogger Buzz that they are making progress and that on that day they are on the process of restoring comments. Then, I started to worry that my post is lost is totally lost. I had a lot of research online and found some useful information on retrieving old posts like using an RRS feed and Google catch, however, I still could not find that certain post!

I was very unhappy as I cannot remember the entire post and still uncertain if blogger is going to restore it or not. On the next day, the 15th of May 2011, blogger buzz has announced that blogger should be back to normal for the majority and that if some posts are still missing, it might be on the drafts. I check mine, but it was not there! On that same post update from blogger, there was also a form in which anyone with a certain issue can contact blogger’s technical team, so I filed up that form and now the 19th of May 2011 got the post back! They put the post back in the drafts section, so all I did is re-published it back. It was a long frustrating wait, but I am happy that I got the post back.

Bedwetting problem with regards to children's toilet training

It was said that bedwetting up to the age of 5 is considered normal and treatment is not usually given. However I have found some helpful things you can do if your 3, 4 or 5 year old wets the bed.

• Try not to get angry or irritated with your child as they too are upset about the whole thing.

• Protect the mattress with a good plastic protective cover.

• Check whether your child is afraid to get up at night, if he or she is, then a night light or potty in the bedroom would help.

• Do not cut back on fluids as bladder tends to adjust and holds less. It is better for your child to drink around 6 or 7 cups of fluids so that his or her bladder would learn to hold a larger capacity. However try to avoid fizzy drinks, citrus juices and drinks with caffeine such as tea, cola and chocolates before going to bed as these was found out that it can stimulate the kidneys to produce more fluids.

• If your child is constipated this also irritate the bladder at night.

Remember most children simply grow out of wetting, so don’t worry too much about it or don’t make a big deal out of it.

What to do with toddler refusing to use the potty

If your child shows no interest in using the potty, do not worry and never get angry at him or her as if your child sees the whole business as a battle of wills with you, it will be much harder. What you can do for the meantime is to take the pressure off, this mean giving up the potty and back to nappies for a while, or just living the wet life and not letting it get to you or your child down. I know how hard it is and very frustrating, but remind yourself that in the end, your child will somehow learn to use the potty. I have been through this, I started potty training my little girl at 2 years old and failed, so I stopped and start again at 3, I have bought 2 little potties and she would not even look at it and when I tried to take off her nappy and let her sit on the potty, she would cry and stand up screaming. So I stopped again and 4 months later, I bought some colorful potty training pants for her and a nice musical potty from fisher price with a reward chart and sticker. I also got a pack of balloons with a little pump to be the reward. So that means, every successful wee or pee on the potty she would get a sticker to place on the chart and a balloon too. Then, explained the whole process to her and surprisingly she responded well! It took a lot of patience and a couple of accidents on her pants as these potty pants really do not hold a lot of urine. Anyway, it took less than a week to get her to use the potty properly all by herself but I would still make her use a nappy every bedtime and when we are out and about.

What to do when potty training

It is best to start potty training when the weather is warmer, probably around late spring and summer when washing dries better and there are fewer clothes to take off. If your floor is mostly carpet, I would suggest that you buy those potty training pants, to avoid accidents on the carpet. If you have a wooden floor or a tiled floor, then you can make your child use an ordinary knickers/briefs/panties or pants. Here are also some things you can try to make potty training a lot easier.

• Buy a potty in which you think your child is comfortable sitting on it.

• Leave the potty around where your child can see it and get to know what it’s for. If there are other children around, he or she may see them using it and their example would be a great help. Let your child see you using the toilet and explain what you are doing.

• If your child’s regularly open his or her bowels at the same time each day, take off the nappy/ pants and suggest the he or she tries going into potty. If your child is the slightest bit upset by the idea, put the nappy back on and leave it for a few more weeks before trying again.

• As soon as your child sees that your child knows when he or she is going to pee, try the same thing. It usually takes time for a child to get the hang out of it, so be patient. Do not make your child feel worried about the whole thing.

• Your child will be delighted when he or she succeeds and a little phrase from you would make it better still.

• You can use a reward system to encourage your child, like giving a sticker or a balloon every time he or she uses the toilet. This technique actually works with my little girl and I potty trained her in less than 1 week. Honestly, in 3 days your child will learn how to use the potty but you would still get a few accidents like pee on the floor during the 3 days potty training. It takes time and a lot of patience.

When to start potty training

I am writing this as I have recently potty trained my little girl. Most parents seems to think about starting potty training around 18-42 months, but based on my experience it is easier to potty train a child at the later stage, probably around 2 ½ to 4 years old. There are a couple of things you try to work out when your child is ready as most children go through three stages in developing bladder control, and these are that:

• They are aware of having a wet or dirty nappy.

• They get to know when they are peeing and may tell you when they are doing it.

• They know when they need to pee in advance.

These 3 stages are very important as this would help a lot in making the potty a big success! I will soon be writing more on potty training and some helpful tips for you to try, so you may check on my blog for some more post later this week.
